Reiki is an alternative healing modality developed in the 1900's in Japan by Mikao Usui. The word comes from "Rei" which means higher power, and "Ki" which means life force energy. Reiki is based on the idea that life force energy flows through all of us. If this energy is low or becomes blocked, stress or illness is more likely to occur. Reiki therapy promotes stress reduction, energy alignment and the body's natural ability to heal itself.
Reiki can have a positive effect on all forms of illness that plague the body, mind and spirit. This includes minor things such as tension and anxiety to more serious illnesses like heart disease and cancer. Reiki can lessen the negative effects of chemotherapy and post-operative pain as well as reduce healing times and duration of hospital stays. Reiki energy works in harmony with all other forms of healing including, but not limited to, drugs, surgery and psychological care, as well as improve overall results.
During a reiki treatment, you will lie or sit comfortably while the practitioner places their hands on or near different areas of the body in order to stimulate the flow of energy. During the session, you may feel a deep sense of relaxation, lightness, or tingling sensations as the energy moves. Some people experience multiple emotional changes as blockages are brought to the surface and released, and some people feel nothing at all.
Sessions are typically between 30 to 60 minutes, but can be adjusted according to client preference or need.
There are no risks associated with Reiki. Reiki does not interfere with medical treatments, nor should it be used in place of them.
Although there are no risks, some practitioners warn that part of the healing process may involve a detoxifying cleanse of the body that could produce temporary side effects such as headache or fatigue. This is referred to as a "healing crisis" and is a positive indication that the body has begun the healing process.
The most common side effect of Reiki is a deep sense of relaxation and calmness.
Reiki is not a religion. Although it is very spiritual in nature, there are no belief systems required to receive it, nor do any interfere with it.
